Tea Time Secrets

Tea Time Secrets

“This cake is exceptional.” Ana gushed while taking another bite. “The citrus balances perfectly with the blueberries and rich creamy icing. How do you get it to shine through the sweetness?”

“A tablespoon of lemon zest.” I replied sipping my tea.

I must admit I do love me some lemon blueberry anything. What could go any better with a cup of Murchie’s Afternoon blend (formerly the Empress blend served exclusively during tea time at the iconic Empress Hotel in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.) The recipe for the absolutely delicious Blueberry Lemon Cake pictured in this post can be found on The Preppy Kitchen blog.

Did I Not Matter?

Sitting in my classroom
youthful and future bright.
It did not matter.

I did not cure cancer,
I did not achieve carbon neutrality,
I did not feed the hungry,
but I might have.

I carried within me,
a chance to change the world.

In a blinding instant, I lay bleeding
helpless beneath my desk.

Why was there no outcry for me?
Did I not matter?

The Omphalos

The Omphalos

Bram didn’t fully comprehend the significance of his discovery. To him they were nothing more than aimless notions scrawled on scraps of paper. A whim to fill the empty spaces between the real work.

His mind could be relentless as it hummed along from one thought to the next without pause. Just another moment of noise when all he ever sought was silence.

Yet, the concept now existed, hurtling in all directions like an earthquake rippling outward from its epicenter. He was the Omphalos and they would be coming for him.

Buffalo

In light of this weekends senseless massacre in Buffalo, New York, it still baffles me that in this day and age people can’t wrap their heads around the idea that we are all human beings, the same species down to our DNA. As a Canadian from the Greater Toronto Area, I have spent a fair amount of time in Buffalo. For several years my son played baseball for a traveling team based in Depew and we would cross the border two to three times a week. My heart goes out to the friends and families of those slain. As a city mourns I sincerely hope the slow and seemingly tenuous process of racial healing in the United States and around the world can continue in light of this heinous act.

Buffalo

A killer lurks
in the shadows.
Silently shedding
white hot anger.

A snake slithering
into the spotlight.
Spitting venomous
black hate.

Life/Forgiveness

Life

The bastard left me spinning at thirteen. Got himself killed at work and never came home. I’ve hated him through years of anger, substance abuse and self-destruction.

Forgiveness

Dead from overdose, his ghost paid me an impromptu visit. Narcan pulled me back but his forgiveness changed my life forever.

Roam

Roam

The luminous moon
gossamerous across Silent Lake.
The wail of the lonesome loon
flooding the early dawn.

My lover, she needs to roam,
leaving me to mend a broken home.

Blind Rage

Violence against women is all too prevalent in society today. It is not acceptable that many women still live with that reality every day and we must all work together to eliminate it. Unfortunately, scenarios like the one in my #weekendwritingprompt are all too common.

Content Warning: Strong sexual and violent themes implied, including violence against women. Content could elicit strong emotional reactions, reader beware.

Blind Rage

The room stopped momentarily as the exquisitely dressed Ella made her provocative entrance. Not 48 hours earlier she had dumped me insisting I was a small spiteful man and now this, as if to mock me.

“Who’s the vindictive one,” he thought, his blood boiling as he slipped into the restroom behind her. “Let’s see how that dress looks coloured in red…”

Unfulfilled Promises

Unfulfilled Promises

If there was one thing Violet was certain of it was that Ernest C. Stottlemeyer, or Ernie for short, was a procrastinator. She loved the man but things needed to change.

Vi waited in the dark as Ernie returned from the Brunswick and dropped his bowling ball at the door.

“Put the damned ball away,” she said startling him. “Starting tomorrow,” she paused while reaching to electrify the lamp. The light illuminating the ‘Unabridged Lexicon of Unfulfilled Promises’ she cradled in her arms, “Starting tomorrow Ernie…”

The Lonely Goatherd

The Lonely Goatherd

While standing amongst his flock high on the mountainside, the sweetest sound did fill his ears.

Yodelayhee, Yodelayhee, Yodelayheehoo!” The hair on the lonely goatherd’s arms standing at attention, his heart skipping a beat.

He began pushing his herd down the mountain and across the valley. He needed to know the angel calling from the other side.

Deep Below

Following the loyalist insurrection, many Minos separatists were forced to toil long unforgiving hours serving Earth’s greed-driven interests.

My clan survived the initial onslaught, fleeing to the shelter of the catacombs deep below the settlement. I miss the warmth of the Minoan suns but the long-forgotten passages have proved the perfect refuge for ostracized colonists.

The therapeutic properties of the moon’s super-heated core providing us with everything we need while planning our triumphant return to the surface.
