The Bottom of Nine

Trailing by two in the bottom of nine,
A single, then double, stroked down the line,
On second and third they jostle about,
While eight and nine both swing and strike out.

Ace steps to the plate, set on a mission,
Wielding his bat with reckless precision,
Direct from the mound comes a red-stitched pearl,
Did he throw straight heat or spin up the curl?

Nary a twitch as it whizzes on by,
“Strike!” shouts the Umpire,
“Hey blue, check your eye!”
Not even close, ’bout a foot off the edge,
The Babe couldn’t hit that with a six-foot sledge.

Next comes a bender, left hung out to dry,
The crack of the bat, it’s a monstrous fly,
If it stays fair it’ll sail off in the night,
Instead, it drifts foul, a long and loud strike!

Kite

Kite

A dancing kite,
In its kaleidoscope flight,
A hallowed sight,
In the heavens tonight.

May the Fourth

May the Forth

May the fourth be with you,
E’er the Empire’s troops amass,
Seek out your inner Jedi,
And kick some darkside ass!

Threads

Threads

Inside my mind,
Broken threads,
Extinguished light,
Darkness spreads.

Cold outside,
I’m safe in here,
In my cocoon,
Hidden from fear.

A single window,
Shining bright,
Caught in frame,
A world in flight.

Trapped within,
A grip that holds,
Watching helpless,
As time unfolds.

If I could only,
Take a leap,
Into the fray, and
Leave my keep.

At the threshold,
The unknown calls,
On my island,
Darkness falls.

Just one brave step,
I’ll take my leave,
But from this fear,
I’ve no reprieve.

Roam

Roam

The luminous moon
gossamerous across Silent Lake.
The wail of the lonesome loon
flooding the early dawn.

My lover, she needs to roam,
leaving me to mend a broken home.

Terrible Nursery Rhymes

Terrible Nursery Rhymes

Bought the Farm

Sadie rushed out to the barn,
A whip with her cowgirl charm,
The animals arranged,
An ending deranged,
Now Sadie’s done bought the farm.

Fad Diet

Fat Larry began a fad diet,
With an eye for sweet apple pies,
He followed the plan to the letter,
And promptly when up one size.
Undeterred he continued to eat,
For the losses he’d soon realize,
Until a peek in the mirror did show,
The pie had gone straight to his thighs.

Sandcastles

Sandcastles

White sand coastline,
As far as the eye can see,
For miles in each direction,
Liberating and free.

Sunset on the ocean,
Waves relentless along the shore,
The ruins of a sandcastle,
A reminder of another world.

A dream world of desire,
of fantasy and fire…

One hundred million stars,
Sparkle across the sky,
Moonbeams drift across the water,
And the imagination wanders away.

Lessons for Daughters

This poem was written with a friend from my teenage years in mind. I remember when we were heading out for the evening her father remind her of this lesson. If she found herself in a compromising situation, she held the upper hand and could outrun a guy with his pants wrapped around his ankles.

Lessons for Daughters

Be wary of the suitor,
Whose fancy you do tickle.
It’s your virtue he’ll purloin,
Then bolt off like a scoundrel.
He’ll talk sweet ‘n try to woo you,
And beg you for a sample.
If you find yourself in peril,
All caught up in a pickle.
Remember, you’ll outrun him,
Once his pants are ’round the ankle.

A Common Fate

A Common Fate

Carbon floods the atmosphere,
Blankets the cerulean veil.
Oceans, rainforests exploited,
Industrial Man, tipping the scale.
Smothered and left gasping,
Mother Earth’s lungs begin to fail.
Rush headlong towards extinction,
Forsaken and unable to exhale.

Notions

Notions

running wild through untamed fields,
aimless notions guiding me
to the edge of an almost still river.

small beneath the pristine sky,
my spirit trusting the azure currents
to carry me to my final destination

somewhere across the silent meadow
a distant smile awaits my arrival,
and the wind calls my name.

I hear the wind call my name,
and I follow…
