What a Day

What A Day!

What a day! It started with an anticipatory fervor. The agenda was set as I headed out with the best of intentions. First stop, the dog groomers then Starbucks to create content for the blog. Unfortunately, the plan would die a quick death.

It was a beautiful but hot day in the Tri-Cities. The kind of day where the temperature climbs north of 30 before the day has even started and the humidity kicks the shit out of you like the shockwave from a blast furnace.

I arrived at the groomers at 8:50, a few minutes before opening. With the oil barons putting the boots to the global economy I took the opportunity to stick it back at them by shutting the machine off. After removing the keys from the ignition, I tossed them into the center console and opened the door.

A few minutes later the grooming shop unlocked the front door, so I climbed out of the car, the dog crawling across the console right behind me. Once he had jumped out I closed the door behind us and headed in. I was in the shop for approximately 45 seconds to a minute then returned to the vehicle.

I reached for the unlocked door and it doesn’t open; I try again with the same result. The noise in my head is screaming, WTF, I did not lock these doors. A twinge of panic pulsed through my body as I attempted to locate my keys in my pockets. The only problem is today’s shorts don’t have any pockets. Next, I look through the window to see my keys, wallet, and phone all stacked on the console.

Queens of the Diamond: Pre-game Ritual

Summer is here when the girls take to the field. I spent the weekend photographing my daughter and her team hit, pitch, throw, and catch their way into the quarterfinals of the Queens of the Diamond, Division 1 fastpitch tournament in Brantford, Ontario. Sports photography is not my forte but I set out to capture some special moments for my daughter and her teammates. I will post some of the best images here on Greg’s Blog for all to see. I hope you decide to follow along as I chronicle the girls’ journey while expanding my photographic range.

Pre-game Ritual“, the first in the “Queens of the Diamond” series depicts the Girls of Summer huddled together moments before the first pitch. Every team takes a second to block out the noise, get the adrenaline flowing, and set their focus on the battle at hand. The photograph seemed an appropriate starting point for this project. I hope you enjoy the images I’ll post throughout the summer and look forward to any feedback you may have.

A Fantastic Fungus Among Us

I found this giant fungus growing out of a tree stump in a picnic area alongside the Gilkison Trail which follows the Grand River in Brantford, Ontario. The location is across the road from the Steve Brown Sports Complex at Lions Park. The facility hosts youth sports tournaments all summer long making it surprising that the specimen was relatively untouched despite the heavy foot traffic that would pass it when using the picnic pavilion. My luck because it was a fabulous photo opportunity.

Lamprocapnos Spectabilis

The Bleeding Hearts are in full bloom in the back garden. The luscious pink brings splashes of colour to dense green foliage. The second image is a multi-exposure composite of five bleeding heart images superimposed to create the abstract form above. The images were captured shortly after an early morning fog had lifted leaving the tiny droplets of water you can see on the foliage in the third image.

New and Old

Remnants of last year’s Rose of Sharon seed pods cling to the end of a branch as new growth push through into the fresh spring air.

The Bottom of Nine

Trailing by two in the bottom of nine,
A single, then double, stroked down the line,
On second and third they jostle about,
While eight and nine both swing and strike out.

Ace steps to the plate, set on a mission,
Wielding his bat with reckless precision,
Direct from the mound comes a red-stitched pearl,
Did he throw straight heat or spin up the curl?

Nary a twitch as it whizzes on by,
“Strike!” shouts the Umpire,
“Hey blue, check your eye!”
Not even close, ’bout a foot off the edge,
The Babe couldn’t hit that with a six-foot sledge.

Next comes a bender, left hung out to dry,
The crack of the bat, it’s a monstrous fly,
If it stays fair it’ll sail off in the night,
Instead, it drifts foul, a long and loud strike!

Fluffy Dogs and Daffodils

The daffodils are in bloom around the pond and our fluffball Max is so happy to be able to run around outside chasing the birds and sticking his nose into our little waterfall.

The New Neighbours

New neighbours have moved into our backyard pond. Nathaniel is super excited to have the newcomers and keeps asking when we will have baby ducklings. There is no sign of a nest yet. I had to print out the three pictures above so that he could take them to show his kindergarten class tomorrow.

Sandcastles

Sandcastles

White sand coastline,
As far as the eye can see,
For miles in each direction,
Liberating and free.

Sunset on the ocean,
Waves relentless along the shore,
The ruins of a sandcastle,
A reminder of another world.

A dream world of desire,
of fantasy and fire…

One hundred million stars,
Sparkle across the sky,
Moonbeams drift across the water,
And the imagination wanders away.
