Yellow Flowers

It seems the colour of choice in the garden right now is yellow. From the day lily to the blooming vegetable plants the garden is yellow everywhere. The blooms images from top left are Butternut Squash, Daylily (which are not true lilies), Zucchini flower, and finally a true Lily from the genus Lilium.

Images were captured in June 2022 in my backyard in Waterloo Region, Ontario.

Queens of the Diamond: “I Got It!”

I Got It!” is the ninth image in my summer series “Queens of the Diamond”. The image depicts the center fielder moving into position to make the catch as her teammate crosses in behind to back up the play. Backup was not needed as moments after the image was snapped the ball was caught to end the inning.

Sports photography is not my forte but I have set out to capture some special moments for my daughter’s fastpitch team. I will post some of the best images here on Greg’s Blog throughout the summer. I hope you decide to follow along as I chronicle the girls’ journey while expanding my photographic range. I look forward to hearing what you have to say. Queens of the Diamond: Checking the Sign

Checking the Sign” is the eighth image in my “Queens of the Diamond” summer series. here the batter is watching the third base coach as they relay the signs for the next pitch. Anyone who has played baseball or softball will recognize this ritual that takes place before every pitch. Is the batter taking a pitch, bunting, is it a hit and run, or is the runner going to steal. This is all important information and it keeps everyone on the same page. Missing a sign could lead to disaster for the team at bat.

Queens of the Diamond: Pregame Photoshoot

Pre-game Photoshoot” is the seventh image in my “Queens of the Diamond” summer series. The girls were getting ready on the bench before first pitch and saw the camera. Not missing an opportunity to pose they quickly assembled for a couple of shots before heading out onto the field.

Queens of the Diamond: Not a Strike!

Not a Strike!” is the sixth image in my “Queens of the Diamond” summer series. The candid shot was taken through the backstop fencing and depicts the batter disagreeing with the umpire’s call. She does not argue or even look back but you can see the displeasure at the strike call in her facial expression. She would go on to hit a single on a subsequent pitch.

Queens of the Diamond: Ready Position

Ready Position” is the fifth image in my summer series, “Queens of the Diamond“. The image depicts the shortstop in the ready position as she waits to make a play on a ball hit in her direction. This athletic position allows her to move lateral or charge a ball hit directly at her. On this occasion, the ball was not hit to her but she would eventually move towards second base to receive the ball and force the runner coming from first.

Queens of the Diamond: Backstop

Backstop” is the fourth image in my summer series, “Queens of the Diamond“. The image depicts one of the team’s catchers at the moment she receives the pitch as the umpire looks on. How the catcher frames the pitch could result in swaying the umpire’s ball or strike decision. In addition, with a runner on base squeezing that pitch is important because it holds the runner at first.

House Sparrow

The pond in the backyard attracts all kinds of birds. While the ducks (click here to see them featured in a previous post) prefer to sunbathe around the edges of the pond, the waterfall is where it’s at for the smaller winged visitors. The images highlighted in today’s Backyard Beautiful post feature a house sparrow that loves to flap around in the cup-sized hole in a stone sitting at the base of the waterfall and acts as a birdbath for our feathered friends.

Queens of the Diamond: The Wind-up

The Wind-up” is the third image in my summer series, “Queens of the Diamond“. The image depicts one of the team’s pitchers as she begins her wind-up. She is completely focused on the catcher’s mitt moments before she explodes off the rubber, her arm windmilling over her head and back around to fire the ball towards home. Of course, the batter (not pictured) hopes to spoil the party.

Queens of the Diamond: Singular Focus

Singular Focus” is the second image in the “Queens of the Diamond” series. It depicts the team’s third basewoman focused on a pop fly on the infield. She is tracking the flight of the ball in that brief moment before exploding into motion to make the catch.
