No Ray of Sunlight’s Ever Lost

No Ray of Sunlight’s Ever Lost

Have you ever experienced that feeling of excitement when you’ve met someone new? All you can do is think about them morning, noon, and night and when you are away you just gotta get back to them.

This week Jim at A Unique Title for Me asks us to explore the primary emotions of excitement, pleasure, sentiment, or spirit for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday. The song I have chosen doesn’t explicitly mention any of the keywords defining this emotion but the singer himself exudes the excitement he feels about getting back to that someone knew he has met.

James Gabriel Keogh is an Australian singer/songwriter best known by his stage name Vance Joy. Before writing his first song Joy was a promising Australian rules football player who had received offers to play professionally in the Australian Football League but chose to pursue a musical career instead.

Vance Joy has released three full length albums and one EP and has several hit songs including “Fire and the Flood“, “We’re Going Home“, “Missing Piece” and his biggest hit “Riptide“.

The song I have chosen to highlight today is taken from his second album “Nation of Two“. The track “Saturday Sun” is about new love and the excitement one feels when they are in the thick of it.

The song only charted in Joy’s native Australia but it is one of the most popular songs on tour. A hidden gem outside his homeland. I hope you enjoy my selection this week.

Saturday Sun Lyrics

Oh, Saturday Sun
I met someone
Out on the West Coast
I gotta get back, I can't let this go
Oh, Saturday Sun
I met someone
Don't care what it costs
No ray of sunlight's ever lost

So tired of sleepin' alone
So tired of eatin' alone
I need to ask her what's goin' on
Are we goin' strong?
She felt like resting her head
My shoulder was the perfect height
We fit so right, so what's goin' on?
'Cause I've been undone
The long drive, the coastline
Lookin' out at first light
Am I still on her mind?
I've been undone

Oh, Saturday Sun
I met someone
Out on the West Coast
I gotta get back, I can't let this go
Oh, Saturday Sun
I met someone
Don't care what it costs
No ray of sunlight's ever lost
Ever lost

Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba

And still the memory's right there
She put the breeze in my hair
No kiss was softer, softer than this
I'm readin' her lips, oh
Each line I read
She left her books in my bed
And her song in my head
I've been undone

Oh, Saturday Sun
I met someone
Out on the West Coast
I gotta get back, I can't let this go
Oh, Saturday Sun
I met someone
Don't care what it costs
No ray of sunlight's ever lost
Ever lost

Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
Lost
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
Lost
Ba-ba, ba-ba ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba

Oh, Saturday Sun
I met someone
Out on the West Coast
I gotta get back, I can't let this go
Oh, Saturday Sun
I met someone
Don't care what it costs
No ray of sunlight's ever lost

Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
Oh, Saturday Sun
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
Lost, oh Saturday Sun
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
I met someone

Oh, Saturday Sun
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba
Ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba

Fantastic song!! I actually saw Vance Joy perform Riptide at a festival show called “Wrex The Halls” put on around Christmas every year by local radio station 91X. He just did the one song… just him and his ukulele. The other bands were Alt-J, Billy Idol and Cage The Elephant.

Besides learning more about songs I like, or finding new to me music, SLS also reminds me of bands/artists I’ve seen live. I tried compiling a list, but there were SO many…
Sounds like bragging, but my parents paid for me to go to shows starting at age 12 or 13, so I got to go to a LOT of shows… and there were several multi-band festivals too.
